Nigel Cassidy, a business reporter for BBC News recently looked into charity giving websites, such as JustGiving to see if their charges really are fair to the charities which use them.

I suppose it really comes down to the charity and how much profit they hope to raise. Some charge sign up fees, some charge monthly fees - all charge a donation fee of some description. But they have to pay the bills too. We have a choice, even as fundraisers - either we help foot the costs of such services, or they are funded by advertisements, some of which charities may not want to be associated with or customers get annoyed with and therefore lose a possible donation.
Just Giving, for example charges £15+ VAT a month, plus a fee with each donation - much more than the other sites - but it is the most well known, trusted by the public to be secure and reliable and therefore used by some of the biggest charities in the UK, because the cost is offset by the amount raised through the site.
For smaller charities and projects though - it is possible for them to make a loss, not generating enough to cover the charges. Which is why with everything nowadays it is best to "shop around". You need to weigh up how much you will lose against the benefits of the service you are provided. What is the point of a low donation fee if your supporters do not trust the site, or cannot find their way around the site.
